"The Aral Sea and Immersion in the Silk Road"
This ecological catastrophe has had devastating impacts on the local wildlife, flora, and populations that once depended on the sea for fishing. Furthermore, soil salinization and toxic dust from the dried-up sediments have created major health problems for the inhabitants.
However, efforts have been made to try to save a small portion of the Aral Sea, particularly in the north around the "Small Aral Sea." A rehabilitation project involving the construction of a dam has successfully slowed the disappearance of the water in this area.
The history of the Aral Sea remains a tragic example of the consequences of reckless natural resource management and serves as a stark warning about the impacts of climate change and overexploitation
Day 1: Nice – Istanbul – Tashkent
Flight to Uzbekistan at [Time].
Day 2: Tashkent
  • Arrive in Tashkent at [Time]. You will be met by your French-speaking guide and transferred to the hotel.
  • Breakfast.
  • Morning: Visit Chorsu Bazaar, one of the capital's largest traditional markets. This tour, taking you through stalls of vegetables, fruits, and spices on one side and the artisans' gallery on the other, serves as an introduction to Oriental culture.
  • Khast Imam Complex: Continue to this large park housing Tashkent's historical monuments preserved after the earthquake. Inside one of the madrasahs, you will see the "Othman Quran," the oldest Quran in the Islamic world.
  • Lunch in the city.
  • Afternoon: Discovery of Independence Square, Amir Timur Square, and the famous Tashkent Metro.
  • Dinner and night at the hotel.
Day 3: Tashkent – Nukus (by plane) – Muynak – Aral Sea (415 km)
  • Breakfast.
  • Transfer to the airport for the 07:15 flight to Nukus. Arrive at 08:55.
  • Morning: Long drive toward the village of Muynak. This village, struck by the greatest ecological catastrophe of the 20th century, lives in the nostalgia of better days and allows one to understand the scale of the problem. Visit the Ship Graveyard and the small Aral Sea Memorial Museum.
  • Lunch in Muynak with a local family.
  • Afternoon: Head toward the Aral Sea via the Ustyurt Plateau. Depending on timing, stops include visits to Canyons, an ancient cemetery, and a 12th-century Caravanserai.
  • Evening: Arrive at the shores of the Aral Sea around 18:00. Depending on the weather and your preference, you can swim, walk, and observe the sunset.
  • Dinner and night at the Yurt Camp.
Day 4: Aral Sea – Nukus (400 km)
  • Breakfast.
  • Morning: Early departure for the return journey to Nukus. Several stops are planned along the route: the village of Komsomolskiy, where a Soviet-era airstrip can be seen, and Lake Sudochie, once a rich fishing ground yielding up to 2,200 tons of fish per year. Continue to Kungrad, one of the small regions of Karakalpakstan.
  • Lunch in Kungrad.
  • Afternoon: Return to Nukus, visiting the Mizdakhan Necropolis late in the day. Arrival and check-in at the hotel.
  • Dinner and night at the hotel.
The Ecological History of the Aral Sea
The Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers, which once fed the Aral Sea, were diverted for large-scale agricultural projects, causing the sea's water level to plummet. This led to a massive reduction in the sea's surface area, which has shrunk by approximately 90% since the 1960s. Today, the region is defined by desert landscapes and abandoned shorelines, with ships stranded far from the water's edge.

Day 5: Nukus – Khiva (170 km)
  • Breakfast.
  • Morning: Visit the Igor Savitsky Museum, famously known as the "Louvre of the Desert." Afterward, depart for the desert fortresses. You will explore the ancient citadels of the Kyzyl Kum desert, including Kizil Kala, Ayaz Kala, and Toprak Kala.
  • Lunch.
  • Drive to Khiva. Upon arrival, check into your hotel.

Day 6: Khiva
  • Breakfast.
  • The Tour: Discover Khiva, a wonder of the ancient Silk Road and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990. The city, divided into "Itchan Qala" (inner city) and "Dichan Qala" (outer city), is a living open-air museum.
  • The visit begins at the main gate, Ota Darvoza. Highlights include the Kalta Minor truncated minaret, the Mohamed Aminkhan Madrasah, the Mennonite Museum, the King’s seat and the Kunya Ark ancient palace, the Mohamed Rahimkhan Madrasah, the Pahlavan Mahmud Mausoleum, and the Islam Khodja Minaret.

  • Afternoon: Continue exploring with the Juma Mosque, the Caravan Saray (modern-day market), the Tosh Khavli Palace, and the Khan’s Harem.

Day 7: Khiva – Bukhara (450 km)
  • Breakfast.
  • Depart for Bukhara. The 450 km journey takes approximately 7 hours across the sand dunes and saxaul trees of the Kyzyl Kum Desert. This trip crosses the Amu Darya, Central Asia's largest river.
  • Lunch organized along the way.
  • Arrival in Bukhara and transfer to the hotel.

Day 8: Bukhara
  • Breakfast.
  • Full day to discover Bukhara, one of the most remarkable cities of the Great Silk Road, known as the "Holy Land" and "City of Knowledge." It has been a UNESCO site since 1993.
  • Morning: Visit the most beautiful monuments: the Ismail Samani Mausoleum, the Chashma Ayub Mausoleum, the Ark Citadel, and the Bolo Khauz Mosque. You will also visit the city's local market.
  • Lunch in the city.
  • Afternoon: Walk through Old Bukhara to see the Po-i-Kalyan Complex (Kalyan Minaret, Mir-i-Arab Madrasah, and Great Mosque). Visit various artisan workshops: carpets, cutlery, "Suzani" embroidery, and traditional puppet making. Here, the ancestral methods of master craftsmen reveal the true beauty of the Silk Road.
  • Dinner and night at the hotel.
Day 9: Bukhara
  • Breakfast.
  • Morning: Visit the outskirts of the city to discover the Naqshbandi Mausoleum, the tomb of one of the most revered Sufi figures (14th century) and a major pilgrimage site. Continue to the Sitorai Mokhi-Khosa Summer Palace and the Chor Minor Madrasah.
  • Lunch in the city.
  • Afternoon: Visit the home of a master miniaturist for a masterclass, where you will participate in creating traditional miniatures with the artist.
  • Dinner at the miniaturist's home. Night at the hotel.
Day 10: Bukhara – Samarkand (300 km)

  • Drive to Samarkand during the morning and settle into the hotel. Samarkand—"The Face of the Earth" and "Pearl of the World"—has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001.
  • Lunch in the city.
  • Afternoon: Discover two remarkable 14th-century monuments: the Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum and the legendary Registan Square with its three madrasahs (Ulugbek, Sher-Dor, and Tillya-Kori). These sites testify to the grandeur of the capital of the Timurid Empire.
  • Dinner and night at the hotel.
Day 11: Samarkand – Urgut Homestay (50 km)
  • Breakfast.
  • Departure for Urgut to stay with a local family. A very friendly couple will welcome you with traditional "welcome tea."
  • Morning: Stroll through the village to meet the local residents and experience daily life. Return to the house to participate in a Plov Masterclass, where you will help prepare the national dish.
  • Lunch: Enjoy the meal you prepared together with the host family.
  • Afternoon: Hike toward the Zumrad Cave. Ascend to a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the village and the surrounding sublime landscapes. Return to the homestay.
  • Hiking time: 4 hours.

Day 12: Samarkand – Tashkent (by High-Speed Train - 320 km)
  • Breakfast.
  • Morning: Continue exploring the treasures of Samarkand: the majestic Bibi-Khanym Mosque, the vibrant Siyob Bazaar, the Travelers' Mosque, and the stunning Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis.
  • Lunch in the city.
  • Afternoon: Visit the Ulugbek Observatory and the Afrosiyab Museum. You will also visit a Samarkand paper workshop to see paper being handmade according to ancestral methods.
  • Evening: Transfer to the station at 17:00 for the high-speed train to Tashkent. Arrival at 19:15. After dinner, transfer to the hotel and check-in.

Day 13: Tashkent – Chimgan Mountains Hike (80 km – 1h40)
  • Breakfast.
  • Morning: Depart for Chimgan, heading to the Amirsoy resort located at 1,600m altitude. Take the gondola lift up to 2,290m to admire the breathtaking panoramic views.
  • The Hike: Trek along the mountain ridges toward the old ski station.
  • Picnic lunch organized during the trek.
  • Afternoon: Descend by gondola to meet the driver. (Optional activities at the resort or lake: horseback riding, jet skiing, pedal boats, or cycling). Return to Tashkent.
  • Hiking time: 4 hours.
